HIGH RESOLUTION LAYERS 2012

The High Resolution Layers (HRL) are raster-based datasets which provides information about different land cover characteristics and is complementary to land-cover mapping CLC datasets.

Five HRLs describe some of the main land cover characteristics: impervious (sealed) surfaces (e.g. roads and built up areas), forest areas, (semi-) natural grasslands, wetlands, and permanent water bodies. The High-Resolution Image Mosaic is a seamless pan-European ortho-rectified raster mosaic based on satellite imagery covering 39 countries.

All layers for Bulgaria were produced by an automatic classification based on satellite images and collateral data and achieved by EEA service providers, and they were verified and enhanced by Bulgaria. At the Bulgarian level, verification and enhancements were made by SRTI-BAS and ExEA. The ExEA Bulgaria coordinated the project.

The elements in this file describe the High Resolution Layers 2012 in Bulgaria.

Imperviousness (degree of imperviousness)  – продуктът е актуализиран

Metadata

Theme: Imperviousness Degree

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

Built-up areas are characterized by the substitution of the original (semi-) natural land cover or water surface with an artificial, often impervious cover. These artificial surfaces are usually maintained over long periods of time. The imperviousness HRL captures the spatial distribution of artificially sealed areas, including the level of sealing of the soil per area unit. The level of sealed soil (imperviousness degree 1-100%) is produced using an automatic algorithm based on calibrated NDVI.

Time series of imperviousness data contain two products: a status layer for any reference year (e.g. degree of Imperviousness 2012), as well as an imperviousness density change layer between reference years (e.g. evolution from 2009 to 2012), and based on the already existing imperviousness product for that previous reference year. This is the only HRL that has previously been mapped (2006 and 2009).

Agricultural areas (permanent grassland) - продуктът е напълно подменен, информацията е прехвърлена в продукта Grassland 2015

Metadata

Theme: Grassland

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

The modified “natural and semi-natural grassland” (NGR) focusses on the natural part of the use-intensity range, with some of the semi-natural grasslands included. The production workflow was based on an initial image segmentation. Information derived from the biophysical parameter layers is added to the objects from the image segmentation.

Partially validated product; summary results available in the technical library of the Copernicus program

Forest areas - forest type  - продуктът е актуализиран

Metadata

Theme: Forest Type

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

The product maps the dominant leaf type of non-agricultural trees, and is derived by aggregation from the 20m x 20m Forest Type (dominant leaf type) product.

In addition to the aggregation to 100m, the difference to the 20m FTY is also that 100m grid cells with a majority of underlying pixels indicating trees in agricultural use or urban context (from the additional support raster) are treated as non-forest. In addition to the "dominant leaf type" classes "broadleaved" and "coniferous" from the 20m product, "mixed forest" is mapped on 100m level. 100m grid cells with "coniferous" constituents with >75% of the forest pixels are assigned to "coniferous forest", those with >75% broadleaved to "broadleaved forest" and those where neither accounted for >75% as "mixed forest.

Forest areas - tree cover density  - продуктът е актуализиран

Metadata

Theme: Tree Cover Density

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

The products maps the density of tree crown cover on a range from 1-100%, they are derived by aggregating the original 20m x 20m datasets, that are produced with no MMU (Minimum Mapping Unit) and a 20m MMW (Minimum Mapping Width). Included features are all detectable trees, independent of use. This includes trees under agricultural use (orchards, olive groves, fruit trees), wooded parks and gardens, and groups of trees within urban areas.

Water bodies (permanent water bodies) - преустановено е ползването на този продукт, информацията е прехвърлена в продукта Wetlands and Waters 2015

Metadata

Theme: Permanent Water Bodies

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

The HRL on permanent water bodies HRL at 20 meter spatial resolution, maps permanent lakes and ponds, rivers and coastal water surfaces, such as lagoons and estuaries. It does not include the sea and ocean, as well as liquid dump sites. The mapping of permanent water bodies HRL is using the same time series of high resolution satellite images, and seasonal time series of medium-resolution satellite images, that is also used for the wetland mapping. A pixel is classified as water if open water covers >90% of a pixel (including shallow open water and submerged vegetation).

Wetlands (wetland inventory) - преустановено е ползването на този продукт, информацията е прехвърлена в продукта Wetlands and Waters 2015

Metadata

Theme: Wetlands

Spatial resolution: 20m

Description

The wetlands HRL maps areas, where water is the primary factor controlling plant and animal life. These are typically areas where the water table is very close to the surface, or where land is covered by shallow water. This includes wetlands both associated or not to permanent water bodies, wetlands with macrophyte vegetation cover or without vegetation, peatlands and coastal wetlands. Not considered are temporary water-logged areas, permanent water surfaces and wet agricultural fields, including rice fields. Due to the highly dynamic seasonal character of many wetlands, a time series of satellite images is used in a complex workflow that is very closely related to the production of the water bodies HRL.
